Life Skills/Academic Enrichment Programming
Academic performance invariably suffers when children are exposed to inordinate amounts of stress in their homes. Guiding Light Family Services provides support for children so impacted. We offer after-school programming four days/week. Our program serves the dual purposes of providing youth opportunities to excel beyond their peers, and providing greater resources and more relief for their parents. We deliver our programming along two tracks: 10 years-old and younger, 11 year-old and above. Regardless of track, all students use this time to do their homework, improve their literacy, and build some very unique life and academic skills.
The underlying purpose of the program is to help students ultimately find their own motivation to take care of their business and excel. The specific topics will include:
· The Components of Success · Attitude Development
· Building True Self-Esteem · Creating an Amazing Memory
· Developing Self-Discipline · Building Your Powers of Concentration
· Time Management · Organization
· Substance Abuse · Sex Education
· Violence Prevention · Conflict Resolution
· Learning From the Right Side of the Brain (Training for non-traditional learners)
The younger students meet for one hour/day with a heavy emphasis on homework completion and literacy improvement. Older students meet up to 90 minutes/day with greater emphasis put on skill development. Peer tutors from local high schools serve as assistants and receive a stipend for their contribution.

Our life/academic skills curriculum is based upon Dr. Klusky’s, “Becoming Extraordinary 1.0” program as well as his book, "Easy A's: Winning the School Game." “Becoming Extraordinary 1.0” is a series of introductory courses focusing on helping students fire their imagination and take greater responsibility for their lives and education.
